"Brownback Girl" parody making political headlines WICHITA, Kansas, Aug. 1, 2007 – Presidential campaign music videos have been all the rage this year. Now, Kansas Senator Sam Brownback has one of his own. It's titled “Brownback Girl,” starring local comedian and writer Bucky Walters. "I just thought it was a tremendous idea with all of the other girls getting all this attention, Obama girl and everybody,” Walters said. The video is the creation of Wichita Eagle's opinion editor Phillip Brownlee and editorial cartoonist Richard Crowson. It's a take-off on the church lady from Saturday Night Live. It's also a sign of the internet times. But is this comedic take on politics appropriate for an editorial board? |

That "Brownback Girl" -- is actually a guy. Bucky Walters is Wichita's own occasionally cross dressing comedian, and his latest roast is Kansas Senator Sam Brownback, running for the presidency in 2008. "It went so unbelievably smooth, I couldn't believe it," said Walters Tuesday night. But the reworking of Madonna's "Material Girl" wasn't Walters' material at all. "In politics, all publicity is good publicity," said Phillip Brownlee, editor of the Wichita Eagle's Op-Ed section, and director of the music video. His department came up with the idea, shot it, edited it, and posted it on line. |
